One thing that has remained true for the past couple of centuries is that the largest economies in the world have also been the greatest emitters of carbon with all things having been considered and taken into account. According to data present on Our World in Data, the United Kingdom is without a shadow of a doubt the single greatest polluter.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that the UK emitted 122.4 million metric tons of carbon between 1850 and 2022. No other country comes anywhere close, with the US coming in at a distant second with 19.8 million metric tons in the same time frame. In spite of the fact that this is the case, the US became the biggest carbon emitter on an annual basis in 1888, and in 1890 it surpassed the UK as the world’s most productive economy.

It bears mentioning that the enormous amount of growth that China saw during the 1990s ended up creating a situation wherein it became the biggest emitter of carbon on an annual basis. As of 2022, it produced over 11.4 billion metric tons in that year alone. The US came in second with over 5 billion, followed by India with 2.8 billion. The entire Middle East came in fourth with 2.67 billion, and Russia rounded off the top five list with 1.65 billion.

Following this, we had Japan with over 1 billion, making it the sixth and final country that crossed into the billions on this list. Iran came in at a distant seventh with 690 million, Germany was close behind with 665 million, and the shipping industry came in 9th place with 624 million. Canada closed off the top ten list with 548 million, and what’s more is that the aviation industry alone was the 12th biggest polluter with 424 million metric tons of CO2 released in a single year. It will be interesting to see where things go from here on out, since these polluters are hastening the arrival of the impending climate catastrophe.
